Toronto Michaelmas Event Waldorf Academy Pageant Play Announced

Waldorf Academy opens its festivals to the community to develop deeper connections. A new Michaelmas event has been announced as part of this mission on September 29.

Waldorf Academy in Toronto, Ontario, has announced the rebirth of festivals as a way of bringing the community together to connect and celebrate with its Michaelmas Pageant Play on September 29.

Waldorf Academy explains that celebrating is an art, and there is joy in the anticipation, preparation, and celebration itself. What’s more, these types of celebration create memories that everyone involved can cherish for years to come.

Festivals are a common feature at Waldorf schools, and seasonal festivals in particular are great for connecting humanity with the rhythms of nature and of the cosmos. The festivals originated in ancient cultures, but have been adapted over time for the modern world.

Celebrated as the festival of strong will during the autumnal equinox, Michaelmas is about finding our inner light and coming together as a community to overcome challenges. It is celebrated in many Waldorf schools located in the Northern hemisphere.

“In earlier times, children were raised within the agricultural calendar,” says Sharifa Oppenheimer, Waldorf teacher and published author. “From planting a seed and persisting through till harvest, these children had a sense of sequencing. In our technological lives, it can be difficult for children to have a sense of the long rhythms of life, and the step-by-step sequences these rhythms involve. To celebrate seasonal festivals gives our children an opportunity to know the sequences of their own human lives.”

For Waldorf Academy in Toronto, one of their favourite Michaelmas stories is that of St George taming the dragon with the sword of justice and courage given to him by the Archangel St Michael. There is a large dragon puppet and up to 8 children hide underneath the dragon to coordinate the movement. Grade one students toss meteors, grade two students stay busy crafting the sword, and grade three students play the villagers terrorized by the dragon.

This underscores how Michaelmas a great time to ponder each person’s own inner dragons and to cultivate the courage and strength necessary for self development.

Waldorf Academy will be hosting its Michaelmas Pageant Play in the Sideyard, with Grades 1-5 performing. Everyone is invited, and refreshments will be provided by the Parent Council, as well as dragon bread served in front of the school entrance.
