The Latest: Turkey's election board declares Erdogan winner

Jun 25, 2018

ANKARA, Turkey — The Latest on Turkey's presidential and parliamentary elections (all times local): 2:20 a.m. Turkey's national electoral board has pronounced incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as the winner of the country's presidential election with an "absolute majority" of valid votes. Speaking early Monday, the head of the Supreme Election Council said 97.7 of votes had been counted. Sadi Guven said the remaining votes would not affect the outcome of Erdogan's re-election. The vote also ushered in an executive presidency system giving Erdogan sweeping new powers. Guven also announced that unofficial results showed five parties had passed the 10...

Kushner rips Abbas, says Mideast peace plan due 'soon'

Jun 25, 2018

JERUSALEM — President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser said in an interview published Sunday that the administration will soon present its Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, with or without input from Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. In an interview published in the Arabic language Al-Quds newspaper, Jared Kushner appealed directly to Palestinians and criticized Abbas, who has shunned the Trump team over its alleged pro-Israel bias, particularly on the fate of contested Jerusalem. The interview came out after a weeklong trip around the region by Kushner and Mideast envoy Jason Greenblatt. The team met with leaders of Israel, Jordan, Qatar, Egypt and...

Turkey: Erdogan leading presidential race

Jun 25, 2018

ISTANBUL — Early partial results in Turkey's presidential elections Sunday showed incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the lead, with challenger Muharrem Ince in second place. The high-stakes presidential and parliamentary elections could consolidate Erdogan's grip on power or curtail his vast political ambitions. The vote will complete Turkey's transition to a new executive presidential system, a move approved in a controversial referendum last year. For an outright win in the presidential race, Erdogan needs more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a run-off on July 8. Turkey's official Anadolu news agency said that with 32 percent of the...

Egypt's president approves law for ride-hailing apps

Jun 25, 2018

CAIRO — Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi approved a law governing popular ride-hailing apps Uber and Careem after the companies appealed a court ruling that revoked their licenses, the country's official gazette reported Sunday. The law establishes the basis for operating licenses and fees, and requires licensed companies to store user data for 180 days and make it available to Egyptian security authorities upon request. There was no immediate comment from Uber and Careem. Both companies, however, had welcomed the draft law when parliament approved it in May. Both companies provide smartphone apps that connect passengers with drivers who work as...

In about-face, Iraq's maverick al-Sadr moves closer to Iran

Jun 25, 2018

BAGHDAD — Muqtada al-Sadr, the maverick Shiite cleric who emerged as the main winner in Iraq's parliamentary elections last month, campaigned on a platform to end sectarian politics and replace it with a government that puts Iraqis first. Instead, he has forged a postelection coalition with a rival Shiite bloc that includes some of the most powerful militias operating in Iraq — groups that get their funding and support from Tehran. The deal underscores the active role Iran is taking in shaping the next government of Iraq, sending key military and spiritual advisers to revive a grand coalition of Shiite...
